Blog 3 (prompt 5)

For the main part of our actual project, we started with drawing black and white images on an app called procreate so we could screen print them. After a lot of deliberation, we decided to design cute animals and characters and make a tiny series of graphics. We had Monday and Tuesday to work on our designs, and it feels like I did not accomplish much, but most of the time was spent thinking of designs and characters which takes shockingly long. It might seem like a really simple design, but making a dynamic character with personality takes a lot of thought and trial and error. I made several different sketches, but I only have two actual designs so far because I kept tweaking them. I did both designs in black and white because you can reasonably only do one color while screen printing.

The hardest part of this process for me was actually learning the app we used. Procreate is definitely the best ios digital drawing app, but I have only really worked with traditional mediums and graphic design with adobe apps. The app is pretty intuitive, but I spent a good amount of Monday just searching tutorials for where different settings and features are in the app, for example, using layers for shading, brush settings, brush stability, and using one solid color for the entire thing. In order to make a graphic seem shaded in one color, it takes a great amount of detail and tiny lines to make. However, I have a much better grasp of the app now and I will be able to do designs at a faster pace from now on. Tomorrow, we’re going to work on actually printing the designs we made, and then tweak them even more and make more unique characters.

  1. Libra, it was nice to visit you and Olivia on-site earlier this week! I can see that you are learning a lot from Evan, and he was impressed at how fast you picked up the screen-printing techniques. Although learning the new app "Procreate" was difficult the first day, it looks like you had lots of success with exploring your own designs and characters. I'm curious... where do you draw your inspiration from? -Mrs. Mullen
